Guidelines for the Implementation of an In-Office Audit System for Continued Competence

This publication, approved by the General Assembly of the American Association of Dental Boards in October 1994, was developed in response to a growing consensus within the profession and among health care policy makers that initial licensure does not guarantee that a dentist maintains the knowledge base and skills required for a professional life-time. The document: formulates criteria for agencies who plan to implement programs in continued competency, identifies nine specific models to access continued competency and elaborates on the inferences that should temper the interpretation of a particular assessment methods outcome.
